Car lovers treated to a buffet of luxury wheels
by Annabelle Liang, my paper|11 February 2012

Imagine this for a day’s itinerary: Driving not one, but three, luxury cars and dining at classy restaurants and swanky hotels.

In other words, living the life of the rich and famous for a day.

That was what nine people did last month in the first Drive On The Luxe Highway, an event organised by Luxe Car Rental – the only company in Singapore that specialises in the rental of top-end sports cars – and credit- card company American Express.

During the event, participants got to drive three out of six luxury cars – a Ferrari F430 Spider, a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, a Bentley GTC, an Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster, a Porsche 911 Carrera S and a Porsche Boxster S.

They made five pit stops during the six-hour event to swop cars and have lunch or mocktails, at destinations such as Shangri-La Hotel and Il Lido Italian restaurant.

Normally, renting just the Lamborghini – the most expensive of the lot – would cost $3,988 for a weekday, and $10,788 for the weekend from Friday to Sunday.

Even the cheaper option of the Porsche Boxster S would cost $388 for a weekday and $1,464 for the weekend.

But for the event, participants paid just $688 to take turns driving the Bentley GTC, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster and the Porsche Boxster S.

They paid $888 each to take the wheels of the more expensive group of cars comprising the Ferrari F430 Spider, Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and the Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Mr Pavel Zotov, Luxe Car Rental’s founder, said he organised the event for car lovers and hoped to hold it on a regular basis.

“There are few things more indulgent than manoeuvring some of the world’s iconic cars and enjoying oneself at some of Singapore’s glitziest hotels and restaurants,” he said.

Plans are in place for a second run of the event on Aug 21, which will include new activities such as night drives and dinner. Each person will have to pay $800 to $1,200.

The first event catered only to American Express clients, but the second run will be open to the public. Up to 12 participants will be accepted before Aug 6.

The first event had drawn seven men and two women, aged between 35 and 60 years.

One of them, Singaporean Maverick Tsao, 46, a director of an IT company, participated as he wanted to try the exotic cars and meet like-minded car enthusiasts.

Of the three that he drove, the Bentley was his favourite, because it looked stately and was the most comfortable. It was even able to keep up with the other cars in spite of its size.

“It was a unique experience for me as I got to try various supercars and experience the distinctive character of each brand and model,” he said.
