Fashion on the field

No one knows when a sport dedicated to masculine egos and equine athleticism first decided to dip its toes into the often-fickle waters of fashion.

No doubt, years ago, it would have been a matter of one-upmanship between the owners of the competing horses to make sure their entourage was best dressed on a day that was fast becoming a social outing.

But who would have envisaged that by 2010, at many racing festivals around the world, the “Fashion on the Field” can often overshadow the racing.

And while it would take some fancy garb to upstage today’s running of the $1.15 million Emirates Singapore Derby, the fashionistas will definitely give it a run for its money.

Imagine – women in dresses worth more than a small car.

Hats so elaborate they can interrupt satellite signals.

Men in suits so garish that bystanders thank their lucky stars that they only get one airing a year.

It all happens on Derby Day.

This year will be no exception.

In the Parade Ring before the race, most race-goers have one eye on their Derby fancy and their other eye on their Derby Day fancy!

It's that type of day.

Scattered amongst the regulars are the once-a-year race-goers who enjoy good food and cold drinks, dressed for a special day at the track.

Well-cut suits and smart dresses mix with jeans and T-shirts in a potpourri of kampung chic.

But the real action takes place on Level 4, where racing meets the socialites.

Both ladies and gentlemen compete (albeit in a genteel manner) to flaunt the more spectacular plumage.

Some outfits go well beyond the call of duty, but no one’s complaining, as the results make for a spectacular day filled with pomp, procession and finery.

Originals only

Most outfits are chosen specifically for Derby Day, and heaven forbid if it’s not an original that sets you above the rest.

In fact, everyone closely connected to any of the Emirates Singapore Derby contenders go all out to ensure the cameras don’t miss them in the Parade Ring before the big race.

So, if you are about to get ready to head for Kranji, draw some inspiration from the pictures below...all in the name of this year's Emirates Singapore Derby Day!
