Singapore Grand Prix party circuit
by tabla!|11 February 2012

Ear plugs are used by most Formula 1 fans who assemble trackside for the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. Well, here’s a tip: Ditch them when you step away from the Marina Bay circuit and head for the party circuit in town.

The hottest ticket in town next week is for the F1 Rocks Singapore with LG concerts, which will showcase performances by Texan legends ZZ Top, pop group No Doubt, diva Beyonce who will be performing in Singapore for the first time as well as hip-hop favourites Black Eyed Peas.

Unfortunately Nicole Scherzinger won’t be here. The lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls was to have hosted the three-day event but has since pulled out because she has reportedly broken up with her boyfriend, McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton.

But that has not dampened the enthusiasm of music fans and tickets for the final night of the concert, Sept 26, are sold out. However, the organisers have released limited multi-night ticket packages, which give access to all three nights.

To have an enjoyable time over this jam-packed weekend, here are a few tips to survive the F1 Rocks at Fort Canning Park:

Battery operated fan – over 10,000 fans are expected at the hill, how else are you going to keep cool?

Umbrella, raincoat and other waterproof clothes – you can never tell when it might pour.

Camera – surely you have to Facebook your concert experience and, who knows, a possible photo opportunity with a celebrity?

Cash – the nearest ATM is at Park Mall and if you need a bottle of water, paying by credit card could be a lot more tricky than making your way through the crush.

Mobile phone or walkie talkie – to keep in touch with your mates in the maddening crowd.

Sunglasses – don’t forget your Guccis and Dolce and Gabbanas – great for keeping the sun out of your eyes and to look glamorous for the international photographers and camera crew.

Glam outfits and comfortable footwear – we know this sounds like bad fashion advice but can you imagine trekking up to Fort Canning in stilettos? Your feet will never forgive you. Fashionistas worth their designer threads will know how to make it work.

The roads are going to be packed, and parking will be almost impossible to find. So leave the wheels at home or park outside the city centre and take the MRT or bus into town.

For all three evenings, you can make your way to the Fort Gate entrance of the park via the steps at either Canning Rise or River Valley Road. After the event, taxis will be available at Hill Street or Coleman Street. For more information log on to www.f1rocks.com.
