Bang & Olufsen celebrates 50 years
by Sharan Kaur, PlushAsia|16 October 2008

Delve into the design history of the world's largest audio-video company with Bang & Olufsen's "An Exhibition of Excellence."

Showcasing 50 years of Bang & Olufsen's television history, exhibition visitors will be able to observe how earlier television models from the 1950s have influenced the design and technology used in their grand television sets today.

This exhibition was an eye-opener as it offered an insight into how history and culture influenced their televisions' designs and functions instead of simply presenting dry facts and figures.

For example, learning about the design of Bang and Olufsen's first TV set, the TV 508 S, offered an insight into the Danish way of life back in the early fifties. Back then, people lived in small communal farms where only one or two families in the community could afford to buy a television set. Hence, the affluent neighbour's house would attract a gathering crowd of tube-curious residents.

Bang & Olufsen identified this trend and sought to incorporate it into their first design  - a large cabinet which consisted of two handles and a set of wheels – so the set could essentially be wheeled out on to the lawn where a large group of people could enjoy shows comfortably.

Another set which stood out was the 1974 Beovision 3500 television set in white. We learnt that the seventies were known as the "white" decade as everything in the colour was deemed stylish. As we all know (save for some who might live in a well), a certain technological company has recently revived the "white" trend with great success, and its music players, notebooks and desktops all carry off the stylish '70s trend effortlessly. Who knew technology had revivals similar to fashion?

Fast forward to today and you can truly appreciate why the 2007 Beovision 9 is a masterpiece as you recognise how various elements from Bang & Olufsen's earlier television sets have been incorporated into its design and function. These range from the one-touch remote control and the high quality plasma display to the advanced VisionClear picture correction engine and the BeoLab ICEpower loudspeakers.

Said Mr Jonas Wulff Moller, Managing Director of Bang & Olufsen Singapore, "It will surely interest viewers to note that we have always been consistent in design and function, developing what is best for the end-user."

There's something to interest everyone in "An Exhibition of Excellence" – Bang & Olufsen fans, tech geeks, history buffs - and most importantly, the consumer looking to understand how and why Bang & Olufsen continues to set the standard for the luxury television market today.
