Seen and heard at Audi Fashion Festival
by Simi Antoinette, Plush|12 May 2009

So, you missed the Audi Fashion Festival 2009 and are fretting to find out what happened? Don't stress, Plush will tell you all.

The opening gala showcasing Christian Lacroix's Spring/Summer '09 collection was one with beauty, showmanship and colours. Much like his costumes, Lacroix's clothes were filled with drama through embellishments, details and hand-made artistry.

During the show, the second last model in a green dress tripped twice - once when she first walked down the catwalk and second when she walked the finale round. Poor dear, we think the dress was a bit too long and those killer heels were too high, but she recovered well, though, she looked a little shaken.

Singapore-born, London-based designer Ashley Isham bopped in his seat while the show went on. He lip synced to a Spanish guitar acoustic version of George Michael's "Careless Whispers" to himself and Karen Ng, Singapore socialite and personal stylist, who sat next to him and nodded his head in rhythm to the song. He looked rather content and extremely cute enjoying himself!

Singapore's fashion glitterati were out in full force and, if anything, gave an indication of the attendance in the days to come. All the socialites you could think of were there - from Karen Ng to Dr Georgia Lee to Belinda Chua and her happy husband in tow. That couple were constantly beaming throughout the festival - rather sweet, we thought.

The drama to happen on the first night showed the no-nonsence stance the organisers, Mercury MC, were taking through the fest. One of their senior staff came over to the interns gathered near the photographers' area and told them off.

"You're not here to watch the show, you're here to usher."

She wanted them to stop guests from walking in front of the photographers while the show was going on. A valid reason, of course, but perhaps the scolding shouldn't have been within earshot of the media, or at least moi! After the telling off, other senior staff promptly came and stood in the area to prevent anyone from walking through. They even stopped a couple from going past who were rather understanding about it. Unfortunately for me, they blocked my view of the show! Tsk, the perils of working! But, hey, it's only to tell you all that is going on.

My favourite show of the fest was 'Private Lives' featuring Dr Georgia Lee. The aesthetic surgery princess held the catwalk on her own showcasing four international designers, namely, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, Dominique Sirop (who was in attendance at the show) and Vera Wang with jewellery by Chopard.

The show was a pairing of fashion and furniture as pictures from the Baker line were used as a backdrop to the show. If you didn't already know, the luxury furniture label is used by US President Barack Obama in his home and by the Kuwaiti ambassador in Singapore.

The show was a smash with 20 male specimens of beauty accompanying Dr Lee in her runway acts and the surprise of the night was: just before she came out in a billowing white Vera Wang wedding gown, the Tent@Orchard was blasted with white down feathers.

A good idea in theory but a bad one in reality.

Colin McDowell, the fashion guru of 30 years and the Creative Director of the Audi Fashion Festival, was not a happy camper with feathers dropping directly on to him.

The area he sat in seemed to have the most feathers blasted out and plenty of people started scoffing as they inhaled fine feathers that got stuck everywhere - in your hair and in your refined suits and gowns. A few guests walked out as they couldn't breathe. Thank goodness, no one had an allergy or asthma attack!

We heard that after the show, the organisers worked as hard as they could to vacuum the feathers away in preparation for the next show - Raoul. Unfortunately, CEO of Raoul, Douglas Benjamin, was not pleased with the result and yelled at the organisers for letting the feathers, well, stay afloat.

It's quite difficult to rid the place of it since the feathers were so fine and also made its way into the air conditioning system. Raoul's show was delayed and an apologetic Mr Benjamin told his guests to take the reminensce of the feathers as part of a winter feel to accompany his collection.

Funny thing is, even the next day, you could see specks of white on the steps of Ngee Ann City and still floating around within the tent as Vivienne Westwood's collection came down the runway.

But for those five-days of fashion bliss, despite a couple of hiccups, the overall consensus was what a great festival and more to come please! Your Plush mistress was certainly pleased with the shows and the after parties so, please relive it all by clicking into our photo and video galleries and see what the fest had to offer and what could be in store for you next year.

Till then, salut!
