Plush week in review: Booze, birds and fast cars
by Simi Antoinette, PlushAsia|02 October 2008

So the F1 has come and gone, and your Plush mistress is left with a sense that it was all a dream.

Wednesday started with a sneak peak of the Amber Lounge at Millenia Walk. Sonia Irvine, mastermind of the Amber Lounge experience and sister of ex-Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine, said she was "fascinated" by Singapore and Amber Lounge was here to stay.

The exclusive party only happens at four Grand Prix every year and this year it's been at Monaco, Barcelona, Valencia and Singapore.

"If people aren't dancing on top of our sofas, then my achievement of the night has not been met," said Ms Irvine. The guest list includes drivers, selected personalities and the F1 fraternity, with expressly no "access to media" on the night of the post-race party. Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot launched its new chronograph, Project F Bang, at the Supperclub on Wednesday evening. The timepiece pays tribute to Singapore's Formula One event and there are only 100 pieces available. As part of the brand's social responsibility agenda, 5% of the proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot SA, also pledged US$20 to the foundation for every guest at the launch party.

Two-time F1 champion, Mika Hakkinen, traded his race car for a Chris Craft speedboat in Johnnie Walker's "Never Drink and Drive" water taxi event on Thursday evening. As the Global Responsible Drinking Ambassador, he headlined the unique shuttle service along the Singapore River that catered to partygoers over the F1 weekend.

Sentosa's Cafe Del Mar was the venue for Red Bull's lavish pre-race party on the same night. Red Bull drivers Mark Webber, David Coulthard and Sebastian Vettel helmed the free-flow event, that left some of us thinking "this is going to be hard to top".

Her Majesty the Queen of Malaysia, Tuanku Nur Zahirah, was the guest-of-honour at the Stylo Fashion Grand Prix event on Friday evening. The event was hosted at the Mercedes-Benz Centre on Alexandra Road and showcased the works of top regional designers.

On the other side of town at the IndoChine Waterfront, Vertu had their own F1 party with actress Michelle Yeoh and flutist Andrea Griminelli. The actress, who most recently appeared in Babylon AD, was accompanied by her young nephew whom everyone doted on. A new series of mobile phones was launched at the event, adding to Vertu's line-up of luxury phones that come with a 24-hour concierge service.

Guests had to literally "get down" to the dance floor in the Chivas Live party at the old River Valley Swimming Pool. The pools had been drained and were converted to dance floors for the night, while British progressive house act Chicane moved the generously watered crowd. Your Plush mistress had a hard time deciding which party was more raucous: Chivas Live or Red Bull?

On a side note, your Plush mistress chanced upon some gentlemen from the BMW team at a Boat Quay bhangra club which was definitely not part of the F1 party circuit. It's gratifying to see these adventurous visitors wandering away from the "official" venues to see what Singapore really had to offer on their own!

The party trail continued into Saturday at IndoChine's Forbidden City, Clarke Quay. The sexy event featured six Playboy Playmates and a Blush lingerie show, and the McLaren Mercedes team was among the guests that thronged the lushly decorated Bar Cocoon.

Race day!

From her perch at the Napier Suite, Your Plush mistress witnessed all the action and drama at Turn 1 near the pit stops.

There was electicity in the air and everyone was in their teams' colours, waving country flags and having a good time. It was hilarious watching the television screens show the area we're in every time the cars plowed through this turn or moved out of their pit stops.

This was it, Singapore's first Grand Prix and the world's first night race. It was giddy to realise that millions of eyes around the world were witnessing this spectacle of sight, sound and fury with us.

As Alonso celebrated his much-deserved win of the Singapore GP, we trooped to the Amber Lounge and did some stargazing of our own: there were Bollywood actresses Preity Zinta and Mahima Chaudhary, Taiwanese TV host Xiao S, and Miss Universe Venezuela's Dayana Mendoza. But where were the Bono, Naomi and Beckhams?

We ended our exhilarating F1 ride at Michel Lu's post-race event at Prive. Renault's Nelson Piquet was among the guests in this chill-out party that brought the frenetic high-octane energy of the Singapore GP season to a gentle, relaxed close.

And, so, the F1 is really over and your Plush Mistress is wondering whether it was all just a dream. However, nursing a hoarse voice from too many late nights and looking back at all the photographs and videos, the dream of putting our little island state on the international Grand Prix circuit has certainly become a reality.

Till next time, adieu!
