An upper cut above the rest
by Simran Panaech, Plush|25 March 2009

When you walk into The Prime Society, you are first greeted by a Spitalfields-like resemblance of a place. (Spitalfields is an area in trendy East London where art, open air markets and fashion combine to give you the 'in' place to be.)

The high ceiling gives you a sense of being in a upscale warehouse where everything around you seems rather English. Formerly an army barracks for British soldiers, the colonial structure of the space has been mainly retained to reflect the historical grandoise of the buidling. The walls are covered in beautiful art depicting a time of horses, noble men, emblems and English regality.

Walk past the bar centred in the restaurant and the open plan kitchen to the side to your seat overlooking the amazing art on the walls, and be greeted by a table placing that can have you in stitches. From the quirky envelope addressed to the diner that opens up to reveal its cutlery to a studious-looking anatomical map of a cow or a pig or even an artichoke, the table mat provides a witty piece of reading before you place your order. A simple menu of brunch, steaks and drinks to choose from, the waiter is always at hand to give you his recommendation.

Weekends are all about brunch and The Prime Society has a selection of dishes to appease your appetite. Brunch includes a variety of egg platters including Australian omelete and Eggs Benedict (right). The Australian omelete consisted of potatoes, mushroom, chorizo sausage and wild herbs and it was satisfying. The Eggs Benedict were served with smoked salmon and sautéed spinach and it was thoroughly tasty. What really stood out was the homemade Wagyu beef sausages (below right) that are worth an order.

If you want to add more to your brunch, a steak of the finest cut is on offer to your tastebuds. The Prime Society's tagline is "Dedicated to the Upper Cut" and I can assure you that their very serious mission of providing the best quality beef in an unpretensious place is no joke. In my party of three, I went for the divine Rump Cap a.k.a. Sirloin steak, one party took the Eye Fillet steak and the other ordered the Barramundi fish.

I cannot emphasise how much the Sirloin made me weak everytime I put a morsel into my mouth. The Eye Fillet was just as good and juicy but I still preferred my delicious Sirloin. The fish was soft and palatable and good for someone wanting something different. The dishes were served with prime fries that were almost unstoppable to feast on and while my Sirloin was accompanied with rosemary garlic roasted potatoes that were good, the tongue took more of a liking to the fries.

Dessert consisted of Apple & Pear and Chocolate & Cream. The Apple & Pear (left) had apple and pear tartatan, pear and apple jelly, pear lolly pop and apple sorbet. The Chocolate & Cream had crème brulee, chocolate tartlets and cinnamon ice cream. The apple sorbet and cinnamon ice cream won us over as our favourites. Dessert was sweet, satisfying and it didn't feel like a thud in your stomach at the end of a meal.

The drinks list was extensive whether alcoholic or virgin. The Elderberry Iced Tea with Vodka was smooth, and the Apple-tizer with apple and lychee quencher was refereshing.

After the feast, we sat back, relaxed and chatted away. Time seem to have stood still, the ambience was perfect to reflect. I noted that partitions of the space was available for guests who prefer a little more privacy and that the flexibility of the partitions enabled the restaurant to be catered for private parties.

Outside, the Society Bar had its own place in the system of the society. With sofas to lounge in, dining alfesco at the wrap-around verandah was possible. Overlooking a lush patch of greenery, you almost thought it were an English garden (minus the flowers) and you could forget you were in Dempsey Hill and perhaps in a chic part of East London enjoying the summer.

Brunch is on weekends from 11.30am to 3pm.
The Prime Society is located at 10 Dempsey Road, #01-20, Singapore 247700.
