Singapore GP: A fiesta of sound and colour
by Sharan Kaur, PlushAsia|24 September 2008

Think F1 and immediately speed-addict race car drivers and their high-technology racing automobiles come to mind. Nothing could possibly match the adrenaline rush you might get as you take your spot in the Grand Stand, cheering on your favourite team as each driver whizzes by.

Or perhaps something else could be capable of pumping your energy levels up even higher - some of the most biggest entertainment names will be in town for the F1 season.

"The entertainment on offer is a great mix of audio and visual treats that will enhance the exciting atmosphere of the first Formula One night race," says Sarah Martin, Singapore GP Senior Consultant of Circuit Park and Events.

And with all entertainment acts carefully timed to complement the heart-pounding action on the track, you'll be ensured of a splendid fun-filled night right in the heart of Singapore.

Dance

Get warmed up by showing off your fancy footwork at Zouk's mega party at the Padang where you can jive to the tunes of top DJs such as the undisputed king of original UK underground Carl Cox, Irish trance masters Agnelli and Nelson and Zouk's resident DJs.

Also spinning off track will be award-winning international DJ Nitin Sawhney Sound System and homegrown Rajesh Hardwani, who promises to fuse Asian sounds with electronic grooves resulting in a genre-defying mood.

Live music

If you are a connoiseur of live music, do not fret, as there is a long list of noteworthy singers from a wide spectrum of backgrounds to keep you relaxed and chilled out all through the night.

Godfathers of reggae, - all the way from Jamaica - The Wailers, will take the stage at the Padang and the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre. Together with the late great Bob Marley, the groundbreaking group has sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide.

From the West to the East: China-born Sa Ding Ding will combine traditional Chinese folk music and Western electronica with her unique voice resulting in an unforgettable ethereal sound.

Rock lovers are not forgotten; popular songwriter Cyril Niccolai will fly down from France to inject his unique brand of rock music into the local scene and if you fancy some 'Yellow Submarine', listen out for the the Fab Four Australian Beatles Show, a Beatles tribute band that will take you back to the sixties.

Taking the stage at the circuit park are the Bellini Room house band and Lanura from MOVIDA.

Local musicians

Acclaimed local artistes will be given this rare and exciting opportunity to flex their skills in front of an international audience.

Teenage opera star Janani Sridhar, who currently studies in the US, will be flown in to sing the Singapore National Anthem prior to the final race on Sunday, Sep 28.

Top acapella talent Vocaluptuous will also be on-site to entertain the crowd alongside other prominent local acts like K'Ass, Soul Circle, London Fog, New Asia, Alemay Fernandez, Lily Anna Nuris and Dawn Ho. Expect anything and everything from soul to bossa nova jazz and latin to pure rock and roll.

Comedy

The Dim Sum Dollies - acclaimed local thespians Selena Tan, Pam Oei and Emma Yong - will have all those seated at the Padang and the northern loop in stitches as they address contemporary Singapore in a light-hearted manner.

Also look out for an Austin Powers lookalike, Austin Flowers, racing up and down the grandstands with his bevy of women.

Visual art

Certain trees around the circuit park will come alive as faces slowly emerge amongst the lush greenery in Humannature, a site-specific visual art project. This illusion is produced through video projection of computer-manipulated portraits, pre-recorded video or live video feeds of actors onto trees, which have a similar 3-Dimensional form as a human head. This visual treat has entertained guests at music and cultural festivals around the world.

Historic car display

Some of the most magnificent and charming historic cars that Singapore has to offer will be on display this weekend. Among these is a yellow 1926 Rolls Royce, which is believed to be one of the oldest Rolls Royces in the region.

Roving acts

Guests will be sure to enjoy a constantly changing visual and audio landscape at the Circuit Park as there will be delightful performances by roving acts - stilt-walkers, mimes, moving statues, break dancers, Brazilian capoeira martial arts, Middle Eastern dancers and African dancers.

An average of 15 different roving acts will be performing daily.

Restaurants and bars

A further slice of Singapore's vibrant clubbing scene and night life can be found throughout the Circuit Park  - with replicas of popular hangouts such as Cafe Del Mar, Hard RockCafe, Dbl 0 and Balaclava. In the northern loop, a Singapore GP interpretation of the historic Raffles Long Bar will figure predominantly.

"We want patrons to experience Singapore's dynamic night life by involving some of the island's best known bars and clubs," says Alastair Hunt, Circuit Park and Events Manager of Singapore GP Pte Ltd.

What's more, patrons at the specially created Hawker Village at Connaught Drive can enjoy an array of local fare whilst watching the Coyote Ugly dance set or enjoy the antics of the roving artists.

Some of the most popular names in local and international cuisine will be featured including Rang Mahal, Tung Lok, Old Chang Kee and Din Tai Fung.

With all this to look forward to, can you keep up? Feel the adrenalin rush rise...

Events at the Circuit Park are open to F1 ticket holders only, while off-track events are open to public.
