Hermes turns stationery into giant art
by Han Su-Ying, The New Paper |05 February 2012

Imagine if the contents of your pencilcase spilled out and became a fantasy world decorated with colourful Hermes merchandise.

This is the scene at Hermes window displays at their Ngee Ann City and Liat Towers outlets.

Created by the boutique’s in-house designer Julian Lee, the displays feature giant stationery items like bottles of correction fluid and scissors next to life-sized mannequins.

In smaller displays that line the shop’s exterior, other stationery items like glue sticks and paper clips are put together to form little Hermes soldiers transporting their wares.

Unveiled recently, the creative window displays have been creating a buzz online and attracting shoppers offline.

Mr Lee said that the inspiration for the works came from the luxury brand’s theme for this year – Beautiful Escape.

Hermes changes their shop fronts every three months.

The latest season’s collection takes a backseat to the stationery art.
5,000 pencils Mr Lee used about 5,000 pencils, all sharpened to various lengths, to create a train.

He also built a car’s bonnet out of erasers.

“The windows tell the story of two office workers who want to escape from the chaos of their office, but cannot because of work,” explained Mr Lee.

“So they create their own beautiful escape using items on their desks.” Local fashion blog Fashion Nation featured the colourful creations on their website recently.

Blogger Stephie Tan said: “I love that a luxury fashion house like Hermes is using low-cost materials such as stationery to create such elaborate display sets – it reflects that in these times of recession, it just takes creativity to allow for brilliance.”

Fashion student Lisa T, 20, added: “I think right now, what is important is promoting an image or a lifestyle, rather than their products. ”
